You should use TLS port for smtp.gmail.com and create a APP password on google account.

the docs say google doesnt work, but it's working for you?

thanks, basically im wondering if im right in the assumption that you cant use mailgun/any free provider with unknown email address signups (you need to authorize the exact address first), or not. the docs implied you could set up with a free account but the services all say you cant do wildcard emails...
